I oversaw sound post-production on this feature-length docufiction film, which breaks many of the rules of filmmaking. Shot on pretty much everything under the sun, featuring traditional animation mixed in, and told with the devices of radio play as much as with picture, The Beast Is Still Alive uncovers root causes, key people, and tracks down missing pieces to much of Bulgaria's post-socialist reality.

The Beast is Still Alive treats sensitively Bulgaria's most painful subject - the post-Soviet transition to modern democracy that never happened. It overlays the romanticised blueprints of Communism on the messy reality of the communist state, but also gradually expands the frame, to send a modern day global message.

The challenging sound edit required restoring and matching production audio from multiple devices and locations, to archival footage from television archives (all sound often in a state beyond repair). Storytelling-wise I put together a number of designed sound effects, and worked with the directors to shape and pace the voiceover for narrative impact.

  • Voiceover editing
  • Dialogue editing and ADR
  • Sound restoration (iZotope RX)
  • Background recording and editing
  • Sound effects design
  • Tracklaid in Pro Tools 10 HD
  • Mixed to -23 LUFS target
